Achieving Lasting Leadership Skills Through Advocacy Responsibility Service

What is the A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. program?

● A student leadership program for paid student PTA members.

● Designed to teach student members skills to help engage them and build confidence to take on leadership roles.

● Provides students a platform to advocate for their PTA, school, fellow students, community and themselves.

● Gives student members opportunities to help serve within the PTA, school, and community.

● Teaches student members the importance of responsibility in the role of being a leader.

● Similar to a Student Council…but for PTA student members!

What sets A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. apart from other leadership programs?

● There is no nominating or voting process to be a part of the A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. leadership group.

● The hope is to reach student members with amazing leadership potential who might not otherwise have the opportunity to be a part of other school leadership groups.

● The intention is to allow any student PTA member to join so that we can help make every child’s leadership potential a reality.

● A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. creates an opportunity to build leadership skills and instill confidence in students while empowering them to have a voice on campus and in the community.

What skills does the A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. program teach?

  • Advocacy

● Advocacy is one of PTA's primary purposes.

● Teaching student members how to advocate provides them with the skills to stand up for their beliefs and gives them the knowledge to support the ideas of the organization they represent.

Examples of Ways A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. Can Advocate:

● Attend PTA general membership meetings and vote on issues important to them.

● Attend A.L.L.S.T.A.R. meetings and brainstorm ideas for additional student programming.

● Promote PTA events by wearing their Spirit shirts on event days and making posters or flyers to promote these events.

  • Responsibility

● Participants learn that they are accountable for their own actions.

● Participants learn that being a leader and part of a group is a commitment.

● Participants learn to always try and be the best they can.

● Participants learn that being a leader also means being a good role model, and learn the traits that good role models possess.

Examples of Ways A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. Can Practice Responsibility:

● Attend A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. meetings.

● Attend PTA general membership meetings and other PTA-sponsored events.

● Take the time at each A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. meeting to be genuinely involved and engaged.

  • Service

● Participants learn how to give back to the community.

● Participants learn how to help their own organization – the RMS PTA!

● Participants learn that small acts can result in significant impacts, and that a key component of providing service as a leader is often simply lending a helping hand.

Examples of Ways A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. Can Provide Service:

● Writing thank-you notes to teachers and staff to present at faculty appreciation events.

● Helping to brainstorm ideas for PTA-sponsored events.

● Creating posters and signs to promote PTA-sponsored events.

When and where are A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. meetings?

● A meeting announcement and sign-up will be emailed to all PTA student members before each A.L.L.S.T.A.R.S. meeting.
